Slide to unlock… Aren’t you tired of that text? Want to change it? Well Great because we will show you how to change that text + many many more to suit your needs! This is what you have to do.

Using your favorite SSH client, or a way to access your device through USB or simply with iFile go to System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/English.lproj/

Find the file called SpringBoard.Strings

Backup up the file

Open it with a text editor

Now find any text you want, For example Slide to unlock

When you will find it, It will look like this

“AWAY_LOCK_LABEL” = “slide to unlock”;

What you will now have to do is edit the “slide to unlock” part and NOT the “AWAY_LOCK_LABEL

Once you are done editing The Strings you want. Simply save the file and Respring.

Difficulty – Medium |

SSH is a mean of getting access to the internal files of your devices. You will be able to access these files from your computer, allowing you to edit strings, add your own themes to your device, add applications you’ve downloaded and much more. To do this, you will need to use an SFTP client of your choice, WinSCP(Windows), CyberDuck(Mac), iPhone Folders(Windows, no Wi-Fi required).

*Note: Before starting this tutorial, go to Cydia and download the “OpenSSH” package. Once done, restart your device and proceed with the tutorial.*

If you do not have any of these programs and do not know where to go to get them, here are the download links:

WinSCP

CyberDuck

iPhone Folders

Download which ever program you like based on your operating system or if you have a Wi-Fi network or not.

Using WinSCP:

When you execute WinSCP, you will be presented with a window:

First you will need the IP address of you device, this can be found through Settings>Wi-Fi, once on this page, you may have multiple networks available, one of them has a check mark on the left, click on the blue arrow of that network. Your device’s IP address will be the first line of information.

Now write that in the box entitled “Host Name”

Then, in the “User Name” box, enter “root”

Now, the default password for any iPod touch or iPhone is “alpine”, unless you changed this password as showed in How to Change the Default SSH Password, it will always be the password.

Once you have followed these steps, click “Login”, a smaller screen will appear with a bunch of text really isn’t important, at the bottom you will be given a few options of what you would like to do, just click yes.

There, you now have access to your devices internal files the screen should look like this

Using CyberDuck:

It is basically the same concept as WinSCP, you are presented with this screen

To connect to your device, you will need to open a connection, which is the button on the top left of the window.

Then repeat the same steps as WinSCP, enter IP address, enter Username, enter Password and click “Connect”

Do not forget to select your connection type, at the top of this small window, is a drop down menu, click on it and select “SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)”

Once connected you will be brought to “/private/var/root”

Where we want to go is the core, where you can access almost everything. To do so, click on the small arrow pointing upward, beside the folder name, this will bring you to “/private/var”.

Here is where to go if you want to access:

Themes: “/var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx”

AppStore Applications: “/var/mobile/Applications”

Default and Cydia Applications: “/Applications” or /var/stash/Applications.xxxxxx”

There are many more directories that let you access many more things, but as you progress the difficulty will escalate and the danger of messing up your device will be greater. More of these directories will be shown in other tutorials and upon request.

If you have any problem or questions, speak your mind in the box below.

If you already have your .deb file, access your device with your favorite SSH Client of with iPhoneBrowser and go to /var/root/Media/Cydia/Autoinstall (If Cydia folder and Autoinstall folder are not there make a new folder name Cydia and in that folder make another one named Autoinstall (Case Sensitive))

If you don’t know what SSH is, just take a look at this tutorial

Drop your .Deb file in the Autoinstall folder

Reboot your device

Respring your device

Voila you are done

Difficulty – Extremely Easy |

There are many little things you can do with your iPod Touch or iPhone just by pressing the “Home” and “Power” buttons in a certain sequence. This can be useful do many things. This tutorial will show an array of tricks that will aid in debugging your device or simply saving an image or text.

Debugging tricks:

Has it ever happened that your device just froze, would not respond to any screen touches or button taps. Here are a couple tricks to save you from a panic attack:

Reboot: Hold Home and Power Button for about 10 seconds and release both buttons, this will restart your device and bring you back you the home screen like nothing ever happened.

DFU Mode: If your device is royally messed up and doesn’t even respond to restarting, here is what to do, plug your device to your computer, hold Home and Power button, until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release the Power button. Continue to hold the Home button until your computer recognizes the device.

SBSettings provides you with numerous power options like “Respring” and “Safe Mode”. Respring can be useful when playing around with themes or system strings, instead of restarting the device. Safe Mode can be useful after a bad installation of a Cydia package, through Safe Mode, you can go back onto Cydia and remove the package causing problems, to get out of Safe Mode, tap the Status Bar.

Did you Know?:

You can take a screen shot of whatever it is you are doing by pressing Home and Power at the same time. The screen will flash white and then return to normal. You can do this, no matter what you are doing on your device, whether you are watching a video or just want to show off an awesome highscore to your friends. When you want to view the screenshots, just go to the Photos application.

Save a picture from an application or from the internet by pressing on the images and holding, a small menu will appear, giving you the options to “Save Image”, “Copy” or “Cancel”. Once again, if saved, go to Photos application to view. The “Copy” option will save the image location URL.

For quick access to your music, instead of leaving your application of unlocking your device, simply double tap the Home button to bring up a small window giving you the options to Play, Pause, Skip and return to Previous.

If have a bit of text you would like to copy, but it’s too long to rewrite, just press and hold on the text and wait for the word you are pressing on to highlight, then you can drag the blue lines from where you want the text to start and end, then just press copy. Now just open notes or mail, press in the dialog box(where you write), wait for the keyboard to appear and press again. Press paste and voila.

If you happen to be browsing an extremely long web page and now want to change websites, instead of swiping your finger downward until you reach the top, simply tap the status bar.

On the Videos application you can delete videos directly from your iPod simply swipe your finger across the file and a red “Delete button will appear, press it and poof it’s gone.

Difficulty – Very easy |

WinterBoard is an application, which can be found on Cydia, that allows you to apply different themes to your iPod or Iphone.

It is a small and very simple application that lets you choose which themes are being applied.

Simply downloading a theme from Cydia will not do anything to your device, here is what you’ll need to do:

Open Cydia.

Wait for the sources to load.

Go to the search tab

In the search bar, enter “WinterBoard”.

There will probably be many themes that appear in the results, simply scroll down to “W”.

Click on the one named “WinterBoard”.

The next page gives a brief description of what the application does and a couple screenshots.

On the top right corner of the page is an “Install” button, press it.

Wait for the next page to load, and then press confirm.

Once the installation is completed, click the “Reboot Device”.

WARNING! Your screen will now turn black and your device will restart. DO NOT PANIC! It will return to normal in a few seconds.

If you like, you can go onto WinterBoard and try one of the demo themes that is provided.

Find the icon for “WinterBoard”.

You may click on any of the themes, for this demo, we chose the one named “Saurik”(creator of Cydia and WinterBoard)

Now press the home button, and wait for your device to respring

This theme, as we can see applies a different font and has 2 different background images that interchange every so often.

If ever you get tired of this theme or you don’t like it at all, and want to choose a “better one”

Go to Cydia, choose the theme you like best and download it, the three following pictures will show you how to do that

Then to apply the theme repeat steps 13 through 15 as shown below with your new theme

**WinterBoard works on hierarchy, this means that the first item checked will be applied first, then the icons that have nothing applied will be filled in by the second item, and so on and so forth**

And there you have it, you now have a shiny new theme.

Enjoy!

DO NOT UPDATE TO FIRMWARE 3.1.3 or 4.0 beta!
CAUTION: Owners of new generation devices (iPhone 3GS and iPod 3g), MAKE SURE your SHSH is saved on Saurik’s (Cydia) server or you will not be able to Downgrade from 3.1.3 if you accidentally do so.

In order to have hacked games, themes and everything you want your iPod or iPhone to be or do, it must be Jailbroken.

The simplest software is called “Balckra1n”, to download it, go to www.blackra1n.com

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select your operating system according to the logos(Windows or Mac)

A small window will open, click “Save File”.

When the download is complete, double click on it, and this screen should open.

Another small window will appear, click the “make it ra1n” button.

Now all you have to do is wait for you device to restart.

Once it has restarted the icon for black rain should be on the second page, click on it.

Wait for the installers to load

Select the first one, “Cydia”, a green check mark will appear

Then press the install button in the top right corner

Once you do that, a small bubble will appear saying that Cydia is downloading

Wait until that is complete, once it is the device will respring and voila! You now have Cydia Installer.

And there you have it, you can now have whatever you want thanks to this application.

If you cannot get past step 4 and you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7

Right click on “BlackRa1n”

Now select “Run as Administrator”

If you have any other problems or questions, please feel free to post them in a comment below.

Good Luck!
