SSH is a mean of getting access to the internal files of your devices. You will be able to access these files from your computer, allowing you to edit strings, add your own themes to your device, add applications you’ve downloaded and much more. To do this, you will need to use an SFTP client of your choice, WinSCP(Windows), CyberDuck(Mac), iPhone Folders(Windows, no Wi-Fi required).

*Note: Before starting this tutorial, go to Cydia and download the “OpenSSH” package. Once done, restart your device and proceed with the tutorial.*

If you do not have any of these programs and do not know where to go to get them, here are the download links:

Download which ever program you like based on your operating system or if you have a Wi-Fi network or not.

Using WinSCP:

When you execute WinSCP, you will be presented with a window:

First you will need the IP address of you device, this can be found through Settings>Wi-Fi, once on this page, you may have multiple networks available, one of them has a check mark on the left, click on the blue arrow of that network. Your device’s IP address will be the first line of information.

Now write that in the box entitled “Host Name”

Then, in the “User Name” box, enter “root”

Now, the default password for any iPod touch or iPhone is “alpine”, unless you changed this password as showed in How to Change the Default SSH Password, it will always be the password.

Once you have followed these steps, click “Login”, a smaller screen will appear with a bunch of text really isn’t important, at the bottom you will be given a few options of what you would like to do, just click yes.

There, you now have access to your devices internal files the screen should look like this

Using CyberDuck:

It is basically the same concept as WinSCP, you are presented with this screen

To connect to your device, you will need to open a connection, which is the button on the top left of the window.

Then repeat the same steps as WinSCP, enter IP address, enter Username, enter Password and click “Connect”

Do not forget to select your connection type, at the top of this small window, is a drop down menu, click on it and select “SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)”

Once connected you will be brought to “/private/var/root”

Where we want to go is the core, where you can access almost everything. To do so, click on the small arrow pointing upward, beside the folder name, this will bring you to “/private/var”.

Here is where to go if you want to access:

Themes: “/var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx”

AppStore Applications: “/var/mobile/Applications”

Default and Cydia Applications: “/Applications” or /var/stash/Applications.xxxxxx”

There are many more directories that let you access many more things, but as you progress the difficulty will escalate and the danger of messing up your device will be greater. More of these directories will be shown in other tutorials and upon request.

This hack will enable you to have many different themes just by rebooting and selecting your theme in the bootloader menu.

CAUTION: Make sure you have the original iPod Video firmware without a bootloader. You can download the firmware here

To extract the firmware file just rename the .ipsw to .zip and extract it

This will not work with Bootloader 2.4. THANKS TO MARCO

**Do Not Include the Quotes!**

1. Go to start > My computer > Your Harddrive (C:\)
2. Create a folder in C:\ called “ipod” (if you don’t put this in this exact folder, you’ll have to modify the location of the folder at the C step with the “cd” command)
3. You Have To Have These Files (Download To Above Folder)
   1. ipod_fw.exe
   2. iPodPatcher.exe
4. Open iPodWizard, load your (Can be Custom or the original) ipod firmware and then make the changes you want. (Strings, pictures etc)
5. Press Write to iPod
6. Open a Command Prompt (Go to Start, Run, And Type cmd)
7. In the command prompt you opened, navigate to the folder where you downloaded iPodPatcher.exe by using the “cd” command.

A. Type “cd..” Press Enter (don't forget the 2 dots)
B. And Continue Typing “cd..” Until It Says Only “C:\”
C. Then Type “cd ipod”

8. Make sure your iPod is still connected, then type “ipodpatcher 0″ into CMD. If nothing appears, change the 0 to 1, 2, 3, 4… ipodpatcher.exe should launch in an other DOS window, close it.



9. Remember the number that you used (It should be between 0-6)
10. Type “ipodpatcher.exe YOURNUMBER -r Bootpartition.bin” in your first window.(Will Take A While)



11. Type “ipod_fw.exe -o apple_os.bin -e o bootpartition.bin” (those are o, not zeros)
12. This Will Create a file named “apple_os.bin”. Its the file with the theme in it. It will also create “bootpartition.bin”.
13. Delete the “bootpartition.bin. Both files will be in the “C:\ipod” directory.
14. Copy “apple_os.bin” to the root of your iPod



15. Repeat step 3 to 12, but each time on Step 11 just add a number after “apple(1,2,3).bin”

-Important: The other files you will make cannot have more than 8 characters and the extension cannot be longer than 3 characters. For example eight_88.bin
-Make sure that you use a clean updater each time you modify your theme, or else the previous theme may “leak through”.
-Also make sure that you delete the “booloader.bin” file after “apple_os.bin” is extracted, or else it will interfere with the following themes.

16. Install the iPodLinux Bootloader.
17. Open the loader.cfg file in your iPod root
18. After The “Apple OS @ osos” line, add

Theme 1 @ (hd0,1)/apple_os.bin OR Theme 1 @ (hd0,1)/Themes/apple_os.bin
Theme 2 @ (hd0,1)/apple_os(1).bin OR Theme 2 @ (hd0,1)/Themes/apple(1).bin
Etcetera . . .


So, your loader can look like this :

This will install the perfect background hack on your iPod

Features:

1. The Solitaire Background is now fixed ( the solid green background is back!)
2. The stopwatch and the lock background is now back and fixed (brushed metal!)
3. The 4-bit color font change is now included!
4. The white squares in the legal section are now fixed!
5. The white frame at the bottom of now playing is now fixed!
6. The titlebar will now be placed good
7. It well never reboot by itself!
8. The themes are interchangeable. (5G to 5.5G and vice-versa)
9. Hacks are interchangeable (5G to 5.5G and vice versa)
10. smaller firmware size so it boots faster

There are some extra resources that you can add yourself later on

1. Remove Solitaire Background (replaces with the normal background).
2. Remove Stopwatch Background (replaces with the normal background).
3. Remove Screenlock Background (replaces with the normal background).
4. Remove the titlebar

How to install

1. Download the Firmware to somewhere you will remember (Desktop preferred)

For 5G Video: The New Firmware Update 1.2.2

For 5.5G Video: The New Firmware Update 1.2.2

2. Make sure your iPod is plugged to your computer
3. Open iPodWizard (right-click + run as administrator if on Vista or 7)
4. Open iPodwizard and in the dropdown menu select “firmware” then select “Load firmware” And select the firmware.



5. Modify what you want IE: Themes, Font color, Strings, Resources etc.
6. When you are done, just click on “write to iPod” and wait until it finishes writing the firmware on your iPod
7. When its done, just click on the eject button and wait until it reboots!

Note: When installing these firmwares, it might delete the Bootloader. You might have to install it again

What is Rockbox?
Rockbox is another alternative to the good original Apple OS. It is also more stable than iPodLinux but a lot of extensions use iPodLinux which makes it as useful as Rockbox.

This OS is constantly improved and easy to use that is why I recommend you install this as well. You can get games, apps and demos.

There are currently two ways to install Rockbox

1. With the installer (Easiest and fastest)
2. The manual way

The installer way

1. Head over to Rockbox.org and Download the automatic installer
2. Download the program that affects you ( if you have windows, download the windows version etc.)
3. Save it somewhere that you will remember (Desktop is recommended)
4. Extract and launch the program

If you are on Vista or Windows 7, right-Click and Run as administrator


5. On the devices box click on Change



6. Click on autodetect (or choose the device you have if you are sure of what you are doing)



7. Click on Language tab and make sure English is selected (or any language you want)



8. Click on “Ok” when you are done ( if it ask you to restart the application just do it)
9. Make sure the device detected is the one you want
10. Click on Complete install then on OK



11. If you get prompt saying that you already have a bootloader and you should reinstall it, Click no if you have iPodLinux



12. It is going to start to the latest build of rockbox + all the extras(font pack, Games including Doom and themes) which is suggested



13. You will prompted with this screen



14. Scroll trough the themes and Ctrl + Click on all the themes you want. If you want all the themes just click on the first on then Shift + Click on the last one
15. Click on install
16. Let the themes download and the installation finish



17. We are almost done
18. Go to start > my Computer > “Your iPod”
19. Open loader.cfg with wordpad
20. Add this line anywhere between “Apple OS @ osos” and the settings option

Rockbox @ (hd0,1)/.rockbox/rockbox.ipod



21. Reboot your iPod and select Rockbox on the menu

The manual way (Pro’s)

1. Get the latest build of Rockbox for your iPod Video

The latest for iPod Video 30 Gig http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-ipodvideo.zip
The latest for the iPod video 60 and 80 Gig http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-ipodvideo64mb.zip

2. Save the file somewhere you will remember (Desktop recommended)
3. Make a folder called Rockbox on your desktop (Optional but makes it simpler)
4. Make sure your iPod is connected
5. Go to start > my Computer > “Your iPod”
6. Extract latest build of rockbox (Previously downloaded) into the root of your iPod (The folder you just opened)
7. The file extracted should be .rockbox
8. (If you already have iPodlinux installed skip to step 9) install bootloader by downloading this http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/win32/ipodpatcher.exe

1. Start the installer and the program will search for the ipod
2. After it found it, Press I and enter

Note: If you want to switch OS, Just reboot the ipod by pressing Menu + center, till the screen turns black and switch the hold button
PS: it will take at least like 30 seconds for the Apple OS to load

9. If you have iPodLinux installed follow this:

1. Go to start > my Computer > “Your iPod”
2. Open loader.cfg with wordpad
3. Add this line anywhere between “Apple OS @ osos” and the settings option

Rockbox @ (hd0,1)/.rockbox/rockbox.ipod



10. Reboot your iPod and you are done

Listening to  songs in Rockbox

1. Go on Rockbox
2. Go to Settings > General Settings > File View > Show Files > Music -> Click center
3. Go to Settings > General Settings > Database > Load to RAM  > Yes -> Click center
4. In the same menu page, Press Initialize Now

To access your songs

1. Go back to the Main Screen
2. Go to Database
3. Leave the Database build

Installing Themes

1. Go to http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?target=ipodvideo
2. Download the theme you want
3. Extract the theme into the rockbox folder on your desktop
4. Go to start > my Computer > “Your iPod” > .rockbox
5. The theme folders have folders that are the same as the ones in the .rockbox folders. You are going to have to copy the files inside the folders into the corresponding folders on your iPod
6. Disconnect
7. Go on rockbox > Settings > Browse Theme > Select the theme you downloaded

Adding Fonts

1. Download this font pack
2. Go to Start > My Computer > “Your iPod” > .rockbox > fonts
3. Extract the content of the font pack into that folder.

Playing GB and GBC games on your ipod!

1. Download a .gb or .gbc rom from google
2. Go to start > my Computer > “Your iPod”
3. Make a folder called Rom (If you do not have one)
4. Place the .gb or .gbc file in that folder you have just created
5. Eject the iPod and go on Rockbox
6. Go on Files > Rom > the game you have just downloaded
7. It should load

WinterBoard is an application, which can be found on Cydia, that allows you to apply different themes to your iPod or Iphone.

It is a small and very simple application that lets you choose which themes are being applied.

Simply downloading a theme from Cydia will not do anything to your device, here is what you’ll need to do:

1. Open Cydia.
   
2. Wait for the sources to load.
3. Go to the search tab
   
4. In the search bar, enter “WinterBoard”.
   
5. There will probably be many themes that appear in the results, simply scroll down to “W”.
   
6. Click on the one named “WinterBoard”.
   
7. The next page gives a brief description of what the application does and a couple screenshots.
8. On the top right corner of the page is an “Install” button, press it.
   
9. Wait for the next page to load, and then press confirm.
   
10. Once the installation is completed, click the “Reboot Device”.
    
11. WARNING! Your screen will now turn black and your device will restart. DO NOT PANIC! It will return to normal in a few seconds.
12. If you like, you can go onto WinterBoard and try one of the demo themes that is provided.
13. Find the icon for “WinterBoard”.
    
14. You may click on any of the themes, for this demo, we chose the one named “Saurik”(creator of Cydia and WinterBoard)
    
15. Now press the home button, and wait for your device to respring
16. This theme, as we can see applies a different font and has 2 different background images that interchange every so often.
    
17. If ever you get tired of this theme or you don’t like it at all, and want to choose a “better one”
18. Go to Cydia, choose the theme you like best and download it, the three following pictures will show you how to do that
    
19. Then to apply the theme repeat steps 13 through 15 as shown below with your new theme
    

**WinterBoard works on hierarchy, this means that the first item checked will be applied first, then the icons that have nothing applied will be filled in by the second item, and so on and so forth**

And there you have it, you now have a shiny new theme.
