SSH is a mean of getting access to the internal files of your devices. You will be able to access these files from your computer, allowing you to edit strings, add your own themes to your device, add applications you’ve downloaded and much more. To do this, you will need to use an SFTP client of your choice, WinSCP(Windows), CyberDuck(Mac), iPhone Folders(Windows, no Wi-Fi required).

*Note: Before starting this tutorial, go to Cydia and download the “OpenSSH” package. Once done, restart your device and proceed with the tutorial.*

If you do not have any of these programs and do not know where to go to get them, here are the download links:

Download which ever program you like based on your operating system or if you have a Wi-Fi network or not.

Using WinSCP:

When you execute WinSCP, you will be presented with a window:

First you will need the IP address of you device, this can be found through Settings>Wi-Fi, once on this page, you may have multiple networks available, one of them has a check mark on the left, click on the blue arrow of that network. Your device’s IP address will be the first line of information.

Now write that in the box entitled “Host Name”

Then, in the “User Name” box, enter “root”

Now, the default password for any iPod touch or iPhone is “alpine”, unless you changed this password as showed in How to Change the Default SSH Password, it will always be the password.

Once you have followed these steps, click “Login”, a smaller screen will appear with a bunch of text really isn’t important, at the bottom you will be given a few options of what you would like to do, just click yes.

There, you now have access to your devices internal files the screen should look like this

Using CyberDuck:

It is basically the same concept as WinSCP, you are presented with this screen

To connect to your device, you will need to open a connection, which is the button on the top left of the window.

Then repeat the same steps as WinSCP, enter IP address, enter Username, enter Password and click “Connect”

Do not forget to select your connection type, at the top of this small window, is a drop down menu, click on it and select “SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)”

Once connected you will be brought to “/private/var/root”

Where we want to go is the core, where you can access almost everything. To do so, click on the small arrow pointing upward, beside the folder name, this will bring you to “/private/var”.

Here is where to go if you want to access:

Themes: “/var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx”

AppStore Applications: “/var/mobile/Applications”

Default and Cydia Applications: “/Applications” or /var/stash/Applications.xxxxxx”

There are many more directories that let you access many more things, but as you progress the difficulty will escalate and the danger of messing up your device will be greater. More of these directories will be shown in other tutorials and upon request.

.DEB files are the files Cydia uses to install the package you want. Sometimes  though, cracked Cydia apps appear and the only way to install them is by installing the .DEB file directly from Terminal, iFile or the Cydia autoinstall feature.

First method: Directly from Terminal

1. Install Terminal from Cydia or if your Cydia is broken, download this and put it in /Applications or /var/stash/Applications.xxxxx (Make sure to chmod Terminal.app to 755 and respring)
2. If you already have your .deb file, access your device with your favorite SSH Client of with iPhoneBrowser and go to /var/mobile
   1. If you don’t know what SSH is, just take a look at this tutorial



3. Drop your .Deb file here
4. Open Terminal from your SpringBoard



5. Type
   1. su (Press enter)

   

   2. alpine (or your ssh password and press enter)

   

   3. You are now logged in as root
6. Type dpkg -i yourdebfilename.deb



7. Let it install.



8. When it is done Respring or reboot your iPod

Second Method: iFile

1. If you have iFile installed on your device
2. Make sure the .deb file is somewhere in your device as well
3. Open iFile and go to the directory where your .deb (mine is in / )



4. Simply select it
5. Select Installer



6. Let it install and respring or reboot

Third Method: Autoinstall Feature

1. If you already have your .deb file, access your device with your favorite SSH Client of with iPhoneBrowser and go to /var/root/Media/Cydia/Autoinstall (If Cydia folder and Autoinstall folder are not there make a new folder name Cydia and in that folder make another one named Autoinstall (Case Sensitive))
   
   1. If you don’t know what SSH is, just take a look at this tutorial
2. Drop your .Deb file in the Autoinstall folder
3. Reboot your device
4. Respring your device
5. Voila you are done

There are many programs available on the internet to make improve your iPod experience, ranging from file browsers to video converters. Here is a list of programs Slus and I use almost daily to manage and edit our devices.

1. WinSCP is an SFTP client that allows you to browse your device’s internal files through a Wi-Fi network, here is the download link, and here is the link to the tutorial, “How to Use SSH“
2. CyberDuck is the same concept as WinSCP, but for mac, to download follow this link. It is also in the How to Use SSH tutorial.
3. Iphone Folders lets you access internal files without the need of a wireless connection. To download it go here.
4. WinAVI MP4 Converter lets you convert videos from AVI to MP4 so you can have you favorite movies and videos on your device. Go here to get it.
5. TouchCopy is lets you copy your files, whether they are videos, songs, podcasts or photos from any iPod device to your computer. This software is also compatible with Mac and PC. Follow this link for more information.
6. Dropbox lets you access your selected files from anywhere in the world, even if your on the go. There is a free Dropbox application available in the AppStore. All you have to do is download the software and follow the instructions on this link.

These programs should substantially increase your iPod experience and that is why Slus and I recommend them, because they are extremely easy to use and quite evidently useful. Eventually we will add more, some will probably replace others or some may get out dated, but we will keep you posted.

Since some jailbroken iPhones got hacked by a unknown person, it is recommended that you change your SSH password to something other than “alpine” (Default password)

This is how you do it.

1. Go on cydia



2. Go the search tab and search “mobile terminal”
3. Install it




4. Back on your springboard select terminal



5. Write
   1. su  (Then press return)

   

   2. alpine (Then press return)

   

6. You are now logged in as root



7. Write password (Then press return)



8. Write your new password (press return)



9. Rewrite your new password to make sure you wrote it correctly

You are now done.

Please note that in all other tutorials you will read, everytime we are going to write “alpine” as the password you have to put your own.

Also it is very important that you remember your password!
