An unexpected release of the software we’ve all been waiting for. A working 3.1.3 jailbreak! A developer by the name of Comex has finally done it. Not only does it jailbreak 3.1.3 firmware, but it is also an untethered jailbreak for 3rd generation iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS and iPad. So your probably dying to know where to go and how to do it, so here it is.

Go to this link.

Once at the home page, scroll down to the download section. Select the download file according to which operating system you are running.

After completing the download, you can either double-click on the file, or right click and select “Open”.

A small window will open, select “Run”.

Once the program opens, wait a second or two to let it detect your device. Then, press the “Jailbreak” button and just wait.

In this tab, check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” square

Select Windows 95 and apply these settings.

GeoHot, the jailbreak king, has reportedly been working on a jailbreaking software for the 3.1.3 firmware. Whether it is going to be an untethered hack, we are still unsure. What we do know is that, he is supposed to be releasing it around the release date of the iPad 3G, which is coming out May 7th 2010. It is said to be called “limera1n” and will most probably be the jailbreaking software for the iPhone 4.0.

So for those of you who just recently purchased an iPod touch/iPhone or made the mistake to upgrade, be strong. The end of this suffering is near!

If you like to have full control over you iPhone and have never heard of SBSettings before, it is a must have. This light add-on allows you to have quick access to your processes, brightness and much more. Using it for the first time can be a bit confusing, that’s where we come in though.

**Note: “SB” settings stand for SpringBoard settings.

To access your SBSettings home, simply swipe your finger at least 50 pixels across the status bar. What will come down is this:

Here you can right away see 4 main options, Brightness, Processes, SSH and Wi-Fi.

The brightness tab is pretty straight forward, simply press the button and adjust your brightness on the fly, without have to exit whatever you are doing, go to the settings application, waiting for it to load… etc.

The processes tab allows you to view all applications running in the background, so if you find that your device is running a lot slower than it should be, try ending a few useless processes this should make a lot more memory available and allow you to continue using your iPod Touch/iPhone nice and smoothly. There is also a “Free Up Memory” button, will free up any available memory to make your device faster.

The SSH button lets you toggle your SSH connection. If you have no idea what SSH is, or how to use it, go to this tutorial. Disabling this feature can help save battery power, which is great when you are already running low.

And finally, Wi-Fi. Same as the SSH button, you will toggle your connection to the internet, which will save more battery than just by disabling SSH.

Now, for the smaller icons, there is: More, Refresh, Dock, Respring and Power.

By clicking on “More”, you will close the SBSettings drop down menu and open the actual application. you can now adjust a lot more that just brightness.

Firstly, is the themes pages. Yes, you can apply themes to your SBSettings menu, there are 4 main ones already given, however Cydia offers a wide array of themes created by other people.

Then there is the “Set Toggles” tab. The name of the tab is pretty self-explanatory. You can add to the 4 main toggles. A very useful one to have is “Fast Notes”, for when how have to take something down real fast, but don’t have a pen or a piece of paper and loading the notes app would just be too long.

Next on the list is “Dock Applications”. As I mentioned before, on your SBSettings drop down menu there is a Dock button, here is where you select the applications you wish to be placed there. Let’s say you have an application that you don’t use, but still sometimes need to access and find it a waste of space on your home screen, you can select that application so that it goes to your SBSetting dock. By doing so, it is out of sight, but can still easily be accessed.

The “Hide Icons” tab lets you select apps that you don’t want one your home screen but then cannot be accessed through any means, except by “unhiding” them.

The next tab, “Mobile Substrate Add-ons” is used to toggle faulty add-ons so that they can then be removed through Cydia.

Extras are little options like memory in status bar, numeric battery and much more.

And finally the last page, “App Folders” simply gives you the directory in which a chosen app is found. The point? We haven’t really figured that out yet really, seeing that all AppStore apps are in the same directory and Cydia in one own.

So that’s it for the “More” button on the drop down menu, so lets get back to that.

The refresh button will refresh your IP info, available storage and available memory.

The dock button, as I said previously, allows you to quickly access apps pre-selected in the “More” page.

The “Repsring” button will simply respring your device. This comes in handy when, for example, you are transferring files through SSH and need to update your device.

And last but not least, the “Power” button. When pressed, you are given 4 power options. Reboot (useful if your lock button is broken), Power Off (also very useful if lock doesn’t work), Lock and Safe Mode, this is especially useful if you have just installed a cracked application and it keeps crashing, put your device in safe mode and it might run perfectly, if not, the .ipa is invalid.

Difficulty – Extremely easy |

There are so many applications and add-ons available on Cydia. From useless fart soundboards to applications that allow you to access system files and strings of your ipod’s firmware.

Here are our top picks:

Number 1 would have to be an add-on called “SBSettings” by BigBoss. This add-on will give you a condensed version of the Settings application already provided by apple that can be accessed by swiping your finger across the status bar. A window will slide down allowing you to toggle the following options:

3G

Bluetooth

Brightness

Edge

FastNotes (An extremely light version of the Notes application, the name is self-explanatory)

Location

Airplane Mode

Processes (Provides the ability to view applications that may be slowing down your device by running in the background, also lets you terminate them)

Wi-Fi

Other toggles can be added by downloading them from Cydia or by downloading certain add-ons. You will also be able to toggle settings like numeric battery, numeric Wi-Fi, Date in the Status Bar and many others. Other capabilities include, hiding application icons and adding applications to the SBSettings dock for quick access.

Number 2, an application called “Backgrounder”. This application is extremely useful if you are a multi-tasker, let’s say your downloading an application on a file from Safari, and at the same time, you want to show one of your friends a hilarious video on Youtube, but you don’t want to quit Safari because of your download. If you have this application, all you have to do is hold down the Home Button and wait for the message “Backgrounding Enabled” to appear in a small dialog box, then let go and you will be brought to your home screen, allowing you to run any other application, in this case Youtube. Then, once your done with your video, simply go back to Safari and continue whatever it is you were doing.

The following images shows the processes running in the background. Even though I am on my home screen, there are 4 applications still running.

Number 3 is an application called “iFile” by BigBoss again, it allows you to directly access system files and string, giving you the ability to edit or modify them at will. **CAUTION** if you do not know EXACTLY what you are doing, and we mean EXACTLY don’t even download this application, the slightest mistake may lead to having to restore your device. Never the less, if you do know how to use it, it is very useful when it comes to editing themes or system strings. A tutorial will soon be up, on how and why you may use iFile.

Number 4, Installous. The goal of this application is to replicate an the AppStore by Apple. The only thing is, everything is free!! You may not find every single app in the AppStore, but almost all of them are there, well at least the good and popular ones. The use of the app is pretty straight forward, but for those of you who still aren’t iPod oriented a tutorial for Installous is available here.

Number 5, WinterBoard of course. For those who dont know it, WinterBoard is an application that will apply themes downloaded from Cydia to your devices, changing the icons, backgrounds, lock clock, sliders, loading screens, Wi-Fi logo, carrier logo. Basically everything that is graphical can be modified, removed or changed. If you have never heard of it, or do not know where to get it or how to use it, we wrote a tutorial a while back just about WinterBoard, go here.

Number 6, an add-on created by David Ashman called LockInfo. This will enable you to view your emails, the weather, events in your calender and much more directly on your lock screen. Very cool thing to have, helps stay organised, and is quick and easy.

We are well aware that there are many other packages available on Cydia that have yet to be discovered and may even be considered indispensable, if you know of any, or have any questions about the packages mentioned earlier, feel free to write about them in the comment box below. Also, as we discover them, if we feel that they are worthy to be posted on this page, we will, so do not worry, there is more to come.

Difficulty – Medium |

SSH is a mean of getting access to the internal files of your devices. You will be able to access these files from your computer, allowing you to edit strings, add your own themes to your device, add applications you’ve downloaded and much more. To do this, you will need to use an SFTP client of your choice, WinSCP(Windows), CyberDuck(Mac), iPhone Folders(Windows, no Wi-Fi required).

*Note: Before starting this tutorial, go to Cydia and download the “OpenSSH” package. Once done, restart your device and proceed with the tutorial.*

If you do not have any of these programs and do not know where to go to get them, here are the download links:

WinSCP

CyberDuck

iPhone Folders

Download which ever program you like based on your operating system or if you have a Wi-Fi network or not.

Using WinSCP:

When you execute WinSCP, you will be presented with a window:

First you will need the IP address of you device, this can be found through Settings>Wi-Fi, once on this page, you may have multiple networks available, one of them has a check mark on the left, click on the blue arrow of that network. Your device’s IP address will be the first line of information.

Now write that in the box entitled “Host Name”

Then, in the “User Name” box, enter “root”

Now, the default password for any iPod touch or iPhone is “alpine”, unless you changed this password as showed in How to Change the Default SSH Password, it will always be the password.

Once you have followed these steps, click “Login”, a smaller screen will appear with a bunch of text really isn’t important, at the bottom you will be given a few options of what you would like to do, just click yes.

There, you now have access to your devices internal files the screen should look like this

Using CyberDuck:

It is basically the same concept as WinSCP, you are presented with this screen

To connect to your device, you will need to open a connection, which is the button on the top left of the window.

Then repeat the same steps as WinSCP, enter IP address, enter Username, enter Password and click “Connect”

Do not forget to select your connection type, at the top of this small window, is a drop down menu, click on it and select “SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)”

Once connected you will be brought to “/private/var/root”

Where we want to go is the core, where you can access almost everything. To do so, click on the small arrow pointing upward, beside the folder name, this will bring you to “/private/var”.

Here is where to go if you want to access:

Themes: “/var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx”

AppStore Applications: “/var/mobile/Applications”

Default and Cydia Applications: “/Applications” or /var/stash/Applications.xxxxxx”

There are many more directories that let you access many more things, but as you progress the difficulty will escalate and the danger of messing up your device will be greater. More of these directories will be shown in other tutorials and upon request.

If you have any problem or questions, speak your mind in the box below.

All you have to do is download the software and follow the instructions on this link.

These programs should substantially increase your iPod experience and that is why Slus and I recommend them, because they are extremely easy to use and quite evidently useful. Eventually we will add more, some will probably replace others or some may get out dated, but we will keep you posted.

Difficulty – Extremely Easy |

There are many little things you can do with your iPod Touch or iPhone just by pressing the “Home” and “Power” buttons in a certain sequence. This can be useful do many things. This tutorial will show an array of tricks that will aid in debugging your device or simply saving an image or text.

Debugging tricks:

Has it ever happened that your device just froze, would not respond to any screen touches or button taps. Here are a couple tricks to save you from a panic attack:

Reboot: Hold Home and Power Button for about 10 seconds and release both buttons, this will restart your device and bring you back you the home screen like nothing ever happened.

DFU Mode: If your device is royally messed up and doesn’t even respond to restarting, here is what to do, plug your device to your computer, hold Home and Power button, until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release the Power button. Continue to hold the Home button until your computer recognizes the device.

SBSettings provides you with numerous power options like “Respring” and “Safe Mode”. Respring can be useful when playing around with themes or system strings, instead of restarting the device. Safe Mode can be useful after a bad installation of a Cydia package, through Safe Mode, you can go back onto Cydia and remove the package causing problems, to get out of Safe Mode, tap the Status Bar.

Did you Know?:

You can take a screen shot of whatever it is you are doing by pressing Home and Power at the same time. The screen will flash white and then return to normal. You can do this, no matter what you are doing on your device, whether you are watching a video or just want to show off an awesome highscore to your friends. When you want to view the screenshots, just go to the Photos application.

Save a picture from an application or from the internet by pressing on the images and holding, a small menu will appear, giving you the options to “Save Image”, “Copy” or “Cancel”. Once again, if saved, go to Photos application to view. The “Copy” option will save the image location URL.

For quick access to your music, instead of leaving your application of unlocking your device, simply double tap the Home button to bring up a small window giving you the options to Play, Pause, Skip and return to Previous.

If have a bit of text you would like to copy, but it’s too long to rewrite, just press and hold on the text and wait for the word you are pressing on to highlight, then you can drag the blue lines from where you want the text to start and end, then just press copy. Now just open notes or mail, press in the dialog box(where you write), wait for the keyboard to appear and press again. Press paste and voila.

If you happen to be browsing an extremely long web page and now want to change websites, instead of swiping your finger downward until you reach the top, simply tap the status bar.

On the Videos application you can delete videos directly from your iPod simply swipe your finger across the file and a red “Delete button will appear, press it and poof it’s gone.

Difficulty – Extremely easy |

The reason the title is Install0us with a 0 and not a o is because the creator of Installous 1.0, puy0, has gone independent. This tutorial is about install0us 2.5 since version 3.0 is not officially released. When it will be released, another tutorial will be made but for now this is what it is

___________________________________________________________________________________

After you have followed this tutorial, Go back to your Springboard and select the install0us icon

After the app loads, you will see a blank screen, 4 tabs at the bottom. (Browse, Downloads, Settings and About)

The Browse tab:

This tab will allow you to enter a URL and be able to browse websites that give out cracked IPA files (Games and Apps)

For example appulo.us/appdb.

You may also notice that there is a little icon that looks like a house. That is because you will be able to set your Home Page so that when you click on that icon it brings you back to the page you want. You will also find the forward and go back buttons and the refresh page button.

The Downloads tab:

When you find an app of game you want, you have to download it in order to install it. You can have multiples downloads at the same time if you want. When you are downloading a file, a little number on top of the tab will appear to tell you how many files you are downloading. Once it finished downloading, it will automatically install the app if it is set so in the settings tab.

If ever you want to access your IPA file through SSH, the files are stored in /var/mobile/Downloads.

There are 3 easy ways to delete an IPA file.

You can either set Automatic delete on in the settings tab. This will delete the IPA automatically when it is done installing. (We suggest turning it off and deleting the apps manually)

You can also click on the edit button on the top right of the Downloads tab and then click on the little red icons and finally press on delete.

One last way to delete an app from the Downloads tab is by just swiping your finger on the app you want to delete and then select delete.

To reinstall an app if it is not deleted, just select the app and then select install

The Settings tab:

The Settings tab contains 3 different section.

Browser

Installation

Misc

In the Browser section you will find Home URL followed by “http://”
Here you can set your Home Page for the “Browser ” tab for example http://appulo.us/appdb

In the Installation Section you will find:

Automatic Install

If set to On, Once an app has finished downloading, it will install it automatically

If set to Off, Once the Download is finished you will have to go to the Downloads tab, select your app and then click on Install

Automatic Delete

If set to On, After the file has finished installing, it will immediately delete the downloaded file

If set to Off, You will have to manually delete the file, you will then have a backup of the installation if ever you change something the app and it doesn’t work anymore.

In the Misc Section you will find:

iTunes Sync

If set to On, When you are going to plug your iPod to your computer, iTunes will ask you if you want to Transfer Purchases. This is completely safe to do and by doing it, if ever you need to restore your device, after jailbreaking your device and patching it, you will be able to sync all the apps back

If set to Off, no apps will be transfered to the computer and if ever you have to restore and jailbreak your device, you will have to install all your apps manually.
